Gardening for Pollinators

March 4, 2023 @ 11:00 am

Free

Celebrate the opening of the Williamsburg Regional Library Seed Exchange by learning more gardening techniques!

Specific flowering (nectar) plants support adult butterflies and native host plants provide food for growing caterpillars. Bees also have special relationships with native plants and use plants that match their size, mouth parts, and landing strategies. If you understand a little bit about pollinator’s behavior, habitats, and association with plants, you can attract butterflies to your yard and help to preserve their habitat. Plants and planting strategies are discussed.

Adrienne Frank is a member of the Historic Rivers Chapter of the Virginia Master Naturalists and the John Clayton Chapter of the Virginia Native Plant Society; she has held board and working positions for both.

Adrienne has a special interest in pollinators and gardening. She and her husband have a home vegetable and native plant garden. They enjoy observing and identifying native flora and fauna.

She developed a butterfly brochure and compiled the Butterflies of the Greater Williamsburg Area: An Annotated List of Species. Each August, she coordinates the Williamsburg Area Butterfly Count, which is registered with the North American Butterfly Association (NABA).
